Technology has been very rapidly changing our world, but is it for the better?

Compared with just 10 years ago, technology and the internet have completely redesigned the world and how we go about our daily life. But is this for the better? In today’s world, we have all the information we need, instantly, at the click of a button, yet people are becoming sicker, fatter, weaker, and more depressed at accelerated rates. Why is this? How can we be getting worse, when everything we need to know is so readily available from so many sources? If all we need is the right information to improve our lives, then how come we are getting worse?

It’s time to take a quick trip back in time. Think back in recent history… Can you remember when most of us had AOL accounts, brick-like cell phones and dial-up modems, we still went to our local libraries, we used Yahoo as our only search engine and we asked our friends if they had e-mail? That was right around 1997. Not that long ago…(OK, it’s been a few years, but it felt like minutes).

Now, gone -or almost gone- are fax machines, pagers, classified newspaper advertising, encyclopedias, floppy disks, cassettes, VHS videos, camera film, printed maps, traveler’s checks, telegrams, travel agents, and pay phones. Soon to be obsolete (or nearly so) are paper-based books, brick-and-mortar bookstores, handwritten prescriptions, land lines, paper money, major broadcast TV networks, and cords connecting just about anything.

But what you should take very important notice of is that the physical absence of these items hasn’t created any room nor has it saved us any time or headaches. Every single item has been replaced by a multitude of more accessible new forms to flood our senses and overwhelm our time. Almost all information resources are now becoming digital and moving toward instant on-demand download capability. The problem today is not a lack of information, but too much information.

Because of this changing marketplace we are all now caught in the “Information Trap”:  We need new information to keep making new decisions, but we have to spend large amounts of time avoiding unneccesary information; this avoidance in turn causes the marketplace to further bombard us with more and more information, thereby further contributing to the overload that we are already under. It’s a vicious self-feeding cycle.

It all comes down to OVERLOAD.

Today, people are on overload. Information overload, time overload, stress overload. We are constantly overwhelmed and beyond saturation. There are too many demands on our mental energies. We have no more time to listen to more information. In fact, these days people are paying less attention. We have been burned out on the constant marketing methods that use intrusive bombardment, rude pushiness, and manipulative hype.  Many of us have turned from skeptics who used to ask tough questions, into cynics who don’t ask questions at all -because we don’t trust the answers and we don’t trust the sources. You are probably already overloaded with too much information, with too many choices, from too many sources, causing you to feel overwhelmed and over-stressed as you try to keep up by multitasking your way to the next email, voicemail, tweet, facebook post, YouTube video or real-life distraction.

Did you know that people are now exposed to an average of 3,000 to 5,000 advertising messages per day? You are being flooded with new information, new products, new entertainment, and other new things that are so new that you never even knew they existed. You are drowning in choices.

So how does OVERLOAD relate back to Reno Concierge Coaching and your personal fitness and wellness?

When it comes to your personal fitness and wellness you’re probably suffering quite severely from information OVERLOAD. You get bombarded every hour with the newest drug, the magic supplement, the perfect exercise program, the ultimate diet plan, and how to make $10K per month working from home in your pajamas… You constantly get new, recycled, contradicting information about what you need to do for your fitness and wellness. Have you walked into a bookstore (or searched the internet) lately and checked out the areas on “diets” or “exercise”? It’s staggering and ridiculous how many different perspectives and opinions there are about what actually works. How can you ever figure it out? How can you filter through the information overload? How will you ever find what you need? How is it possible to actually find the truth?

Thanks to the internet you can get fitness and wellness information from virtually anywhere. But, what information do you actually need? What’s the right choice? When do you need it? Is it accurate? What’s the sequence? Who can you trust? Does it matter? Will it help? Will it hurt? How do you use it? How much do you use? Have you “Googled” your fitness and wellness questions -only to find out that there are 48 million webpages that match your search queries? How will you ever figure it out if you already don’t have enough time or energy?

We have all had to develop special radars, filters, and barriers to limit the information flow that is overwhelming us. However, we often forget that our radars, filters, and barriers are also for letting things in. Most likely, you are continually on the lookout for tools that will make things easier, while at the same time eliminating information that adds to your confusion and stress. This explosive stage of the “Information Age” has forced us to learn how to actively search for things that simplify or help us to reduce our overabundance of confusing information and then apply it to the real world.

It is time for a totally new approach.
